A man found a cocoon of a butterfly . one  day, a small opening appeared . he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as struggled to squeeze it's body through the tiny hole then it stopped, as if it counld'nt go further. so the men decided to help the butterfly. he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remainig bits of coccoon . the butterfly emerged easily but it has a swollen body and shriveld wings . the man continued to watch it' expecting that any minute the wings the man continued to watch it' expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body, neither happened!in fact the butterfly spent the rest of it's life crawaling around. it was never able to fly. what the man is his and haste did not understand : the restricting coccoon and the struggle required by the butterfly to get though the opening was a way of forcing the fluid from the body into the wings so that it would be ready for flight once that was achieved.

sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. going through life with no obstacles would cripple us. we will be as strong as we could have been as we would never fly.

Overcoming the Habit of Postponing Actions (Procrastination)

When do we procrastinate actions?

When do we postpone important things that we know we need to do for our success?

It is when we are not sure of success. It is when we are in doubt. Or, it is when the work is boring or unpleasant.

If you have been postponing something for long, look back to find out what is the reason. Once you know the reason, make a decision to do it now / today / this week, without any further delay. Make a commitment to yourself. Make a promise to yourself to finally do it. That is all it takes

Organic Chemistry - Morrison and Boyd.

"Do any chemists or (pre-med students) who graduated in the last 40 years not tremble when they hear the phrase 'Morrison and Boyd'? More than 2 million students have used this book, now in its sixth edition."

—From Chemistry, Spring 2001 issue in which R.T. Morrison and R. N. Boyd's Organic Chemistry was named one of the Silver Shelf winners in "The Great Books of Chemistry."

"The Secret of Understanding and Using the Power of Beliefs for Your Success"

To understand the mind, we can divide it into two parts: conscious mind and sub-conscious mind. We use conscious mind when we knowingly think or do something. Some function like working of our heart is not under conscious control. It is the power of the sub-conscious mind that makes our heart beat about 72 times per minute regularly for up to 100 years.

Beliefs and your subconscious mind

Psychologists have found that we can consciously be aware of only 7 + 2 items at a time. But our sub-conscious mind can be aware of a large number of items at a time. For example, at any time, the sub-conscious is aware of many body functions including blood pressure, heart beats, body temperature, chemical balances, blood flow, taking care of emergencies, etc.

The subconscious mind is not under our conscious control. The sub-conscious mind functions on the basis of information stored in it. This is the basis of mind programming. Mind programming means that if we can put information in a person's subconscious mind, then we can modify that person's behavior.

The main difficulty is the conscious mind, which does not let us put information in the sub-conscious mind. Actually the conscious mind analyses the information, and discards all that it considers false or non-useful. For example, someone who is not confident, says to himself "I am confident". The conscious mind analyses this sentence and decides that this sentence is false. And it does not put this information into the sub-conscious mind.

Power of Beliefs

A belief is an idea that we accept to be true. It can be a fact, a guiding principle, an opinion, or a faith in someone or something. We can have faith in our teacher or doctor, in the value of being honest or good, in the value of exercise for good health, in our ability to succeed, or in the value of reading newspapers, magazines, and books.

A belief can be conscious or subconscious. Conscious beliefs mean that we know that we believe something. Subconscious belief means that we do not even know that we believe something.

An example of subconscious belief is that we accept to be true what we see on the TV, what we hear on the radio, and what we read in the newspapers.

Beliefs are powerful. Here are a few examples that illustrate how beliefs affect performance.

Elephant and rope

When an elephant is a small baby elephant, it is tied with a big strong chain. It tries hard to escape from the chain, but it can not escape. As the elephant grows, the trainers replace the big strong chain by small rope. Surprisingly, the elephant still remains tied to the rope. It probably thinks "There is no point trying ... I know ... I have tried before and failed ... I am tied with the rope ... I can not escape".

How some new world records were created

In the first half of this century, athletes and trainers believed that human body could not run a mile in 4 minutes. Then, in May 1954, one runner ran a mile in less than 4 minutes. In June of the same year, another person did it again. Since then, hundreds of people have run a mile in less than 4 minutes. It shows that the belief in impossibility was in the mind only.

In weight-lifting it was believed that 500 pounds was the limit for the human body. Many could lift 499, but none 500 or more. Then the trainers fooled a Soviet weight lifter Vasily Alexeev: the actual weight was 501.5 pounds but they told it was only 499. Vasily Alexeev lifted the weight. Once the belief was broken, many other weight-lifters were able to lift more than 500 pounds.

The magic of sugar tablets

The magic of sugar tablets (also called the placebo effect) is well known to the medical doctors. In some placebo studies, patients were given sugar tablets that contained no medicine. But they were told that they were getting some powerful medicine. Many people got cured by sugar tablets. They got well just by believing that they were getting some real medicine. This example shows how the mind affects your body.

Students get high marks because of teachers belief

In one study, educational researchers divided students of equal IQ into two groups. Teachers were told that one group had a high IQ and should get high marks. The other had a low IQ and should get low marks. What do you think was the result? The group which teachers expected to get high marks, really got high marks. The other group got low marks

Kapil Sibal Shoots 80% minimum in 12th Board Exams for IIT Aspirants

Securing of 60 percent marks in class XII will not be sufficient for those aspiring for IITs from 2011 as the criteria is being revised wherein higher percentage would be required which will be taken into account unlike the practice now.

The government on Monday appointed a committee of IIT directors to suggest the revised entrance system under which marks obtained in class XII will be given importance along with the entrance marks.

Why?

The move is aimed at ensuring that students take their class XII seriously and checking the growth of coaching centres, which are thriving on imparting coaching to students for IIT entrance, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said.

"The present criteria is that students need to secure 60 per cent at class XII for appearing in IIT-JEE. This is not acceptable. The minimum marks required for IIT-JEE could be raised up to 80 to 85 percent," Sibal told reporters after a meeting of the IIT Council, the apex decision making body for the elite institutes, here.

At the same time he added that the decision about the required percentage will be taken by the committee.

We Want to get Rid of Coaching Centers...

"The coaching centres are giving training for the IIT entrance. As a result, the students are not studying seriously for class XII exam and giving more attention to entrance. We want to get rid of the coaching centres by giving more weightage to the board exam," Sibal said.

The IIT-JEE system was revised three years ago when the eligibility criteria was raised to 60 percent at class XII level for appearing in the entrance.

Sibal said a three-member committee has been set up to look into the curriculum and submit its report within three months, suggesting required changes.

The committee comprises Science and Technology Secretary T Ramasami, Secretary Department of Biotechnology M K Bhan and CSIR Director General Samir Brahmachari.

The committee will deliberate on new age courses to be started by the IITs. Sibal has been insisting that the IITs could explore starting courses in Humanities and Medicine also. The committee will give its report by January.

Besides, the government has decided to change the eligibility of students for availing the merit-cum-means scholarship being given at the end of class XII. The income criteria, which was Rs two lakh per annum as family income, has been changed to Rs 4.5 lakh.

To attract more foreign students, the government will reduce the fee structure for students from SAARC and African countries, Sibal said.

Comment by an IITJEE Aspirant ...

This is an unacceptable proposal. What do they think students are? Learning machines? They expect us to be good students in boards as well as prepare for IIT-JEE at the same time, the latter having a humongous syllabus and the most difficult exam in the world? And whats with the "Get rid of coaching institutes" bull talk? They expect us to prepare for JEEs all by ourselves AND cope up with school-schedule((most of them hardly co-operate with JEE aspirants and demand we pay great attention to hardly useful or productive activities in the name of "extra-curriculars")) AND do very nicely in board exams. This is a stupid idea based on ignorant notions and almost inhumane expectations from students.People who approve of it are no more than pseudo-intellectual dumb asses who have only one mugged up filmy line about students is that they should pay more attention to their studies and work hard and do whatever the system wants them to no matter how realistically possible it is.

Most of the teachers in almost all schools in India are hardly qualified to teach the ABCs for JEEs and, most of them just come in babble out mugged up lines and leave the classroom hardly caring about whether students have understood the topic or not. They are not dust compared to coaching institutes' teachers and this Sibal calls the latter "shops", maybe he is just insecure that there are institutions on which students rely that are not under his control Most of the schools consume up students' time with unnecessary 100% unproductive and unfruitful activities and subjects that we will hardly have any use for and there are idiots who think it should be easy for an aspirant to get 80-85% marks in boards.

The naive shit-heads who think mugging-up is not necessary to get 85% in boards while preparing IIT-JEEs syllabus need to wake up and get a reality check.

How To Solve Physics Problems

How To Solve Physics Problems PDF Print E-mail

The problem asked in examinations such as IITJEE not only tests your knowledge of physics but also your skill in solving problems just like an engineer is called to solve workspace problems.

You need to have a clear mastery of the concepts of physics besides you should have the power to visualize a given physical situation in its entirety.

Only then you can hope to succeed in such a high level entrance test.
A good analogue of problem solving in physics is the process of completing a jigsaw puzzle, in which every piece is to be put in its proper position .

Just as you cannot build a jigsaw by putting every piece in its correct position the first time through you cannot hope to solve a physics problem by simply writing down the correct equations and applying correct reasoning the first time through.

You need to visualize the whole problem in the mind first and then go for steps required to get the answer.

Generally the problem solving in the physics can be broken down in the following four steps:

• Visualizing the physical situation described and identifying the known and unknowns
• Designing a strategy
• Working on that strategy
• Checking the resulting
